Urban Gz took part in an ambitious multimedia project with a fantastic outcome
Who Took Part
Six young women from Urban Gz, a Just ‘B’ Me girls group, supported by Scotswood Area Strategy.
Purpose
The group had been meeting to discuss issues such as self esteem, confidence, bullying & identity (all the girls are from ethnic minority backgrounds). They were interested in music and song writing and wanted to make a DVD. The objective was to raise the self esteem and confidence of the girls, support them in developing new skills and to produce a positive, feel-good DVD targeted at teenage girls.
Project Outline
We supported the young people to:
- brainstorm ideas
- plan the film
- they decided to use green screen technology to great effect.
What Happened
- workshops were held on storytelling, storyboarding and media literacy
- they wrote, produced and recorded a song
- they created a dance routine •
- we filmed in several locations •
Results
A DVD of the media they created was given to each participant.
Benefits for Participants
The confidence and self esteem of the young women was increased dramatically when they saw their film.

Scotswood Area Strategy commissioned the project, which was funded by the Newcastle Youth Opportunity Fund.
