Newcastle Mela Multimedia Project

Training young people in digital video and photography skills for the Newcastle Mela.

Who Took Part

Over 100 young people from across the region.

To train a small group of young people in digital video and photography skills so they could document the Newcastle Mela and we also provided VJ drop in workshops at the Mela event itself.

Project Outline

The group took part in several media workshops in the weeks leading up to the Mela so they’d be ready to document the two day cultural event. There were all sorts of other activities prepared which would be very visual- a fashion show, live music, dancers.

What Happened

We provided digital video and photography workshops before the event then professional mentors supported them at the event to ensure they were confident with the equipment and getting the pictures they’d decided on. There was also a VJ skills drop in for anyone who wanted to try it using our library of clips using VJ software to mix visuals to music, live.

The team really enjoyed their time using digital media and hope to do it again next year. Over 100 tried Vjing at the Mela.

Sharing The Results With Others

The group produced a great deal of footage and digital stills which were exhibited at a celebration event in Newcastle.

Benefits for Participants

The groups had the opportunity to work in small production teams, developed their media skills and left a lasting reminder of the event in their pictures.
