Photo Club

Inclusive group success for the Photo Club of young people.

I was touched by the commitment of the group, their support for one another and of course by the stunning photographs.

Who Took Part

PhotoClub is an inclusive group of young people with and without disabilities aged 11-18.

The club has been running since 2011 and Digital Voice supports them in developing their photography skills.

    What Happened

The young people come up with ideas of what they’d like to do; they decided to produce photos based on trips to look at nature; the beach and woodland of Jesmond Dene as well as doing projects such as portraits, photostories set in the Castle Keep and the terrible take-over of the City Library by zombies...Other sessions have concentrated on light-painting and collage composition.

The clubs have produced thousands of photos and edited many of them; they have exhibited them at the City Library and Space2 and have a week-long exhibition at Baltic in 2013. There is an on-line gallery at the bottom of this page.

Benefits for Participants

The group members have had the opportunity to develop their creativity and learn new ways of presenting their ideas photographically. They work mostly with iPad technology.

Newcastle City Council’s Arts Development Team commissioned the clubs as part of their Arts Connect initiative to give disabled young people the opportunity to participate in mainstream arts.

Who Else Would Benefit From This Sort of Project

This approach is a very effective way of involving young people to develop their creativity by offering them professional tuition and support.
