Tyneside Geostories

New project completed in Chopwell area exploring its rich heritage.

Who Took Part

Building on the success of the first Geostories project in High Spen, we involved groups from Walker and Chopwell to extend our Geostories map.

Geostories is a project linking people, places and memories.

    What Happened

This is an inter-generational project; the older people tell their stories to young people who make these into films with our help. The older folks research the archives for photos and digitize their own family albums to illustrate their memories and help the younger ones find the places in those old photos, creating merged images on iPads which show their areas then and now.

We end each project with a film screening and exhibition for the community to see the results. In Chopwell the children were all from Chopwell Primary School so we also had a whole school assembly, which was lovely for the group as they had the admiration of their peers. You can watch the videos embedded in the map below.

Benefits for Participants

The groups had the opportunity to learn about their areas’ heritage and learn to use iPad technology creatively.

Who Else Would Benefit from this Sort of Project

We hope to continue to populate the map with films from all over the area.
