North East Charity Awards Finalists!

Pass our fancy outfits, Digital Voice has been nominated for Outstanding Social Enterprise in the North East Charity Awards! These annual awards celebrate charities, the voluntary sector and the people and companies that support them across the region and we’re delighted to be counted amongst them this year.

Digital Voice is a purpose driven social enterprise based in Gateshead. Our mission is to empower marginalised people to have a voice through creative digital media and deliver digital skills training to develop their skills and confidence. We aim to offer opportunities to help people fulfil their potential digitally, and we aim to reduce digital exclusion.”

- Julie Nicholson, Managing Director

Our nomination highlighted DigitalMe, our innovative approach to sharing difficult or painful stories. It gives people a voice to share their experiences whilst maintaining their anonymity. They are then able to affect positive change, not only for themselves, but for other people in similar circumstances. This year we’ve created DigitalMe films with the Tyne & Wear Fire Service, Gateshead Council’s Youth Justice Team and its Virtual School; all of which will be used as education or training resources.

We were particularly proud to be commissioned to create a new DigitalMe to accompany Gateshead’s Director of Public Health’s annual report. This year the focus was on the devastating effects of addiction and suicide and we created a film, Ripples of Despair, which highlighted the lived experience of people in Gateshead.

“I first set up Digital Voice to give a voice to individuals and groups who are digitally excluded. Eighteen years on, that is still our mission. To have our work recognised like this is fantastic, made even more special that it's in our native North East.”

- Julie Nicholson

We’ll keep our fingers crossed and in the meantime wish all the other finalists good luck!
