Digital Voice has had some great news: We have become a charity!

We were founded in 2007 as a Community Interest Company, but decided in 2025 that charity status would allow us to do even more work to empower marginalised groups.

For 18 years Digital Voice for Communities CIC has been committed to championing digital inclusion for all, amplifying the voices of marginalised people, and delivering key digital skills to our course participants. Digital for Communities CIO will not only continue this important work, but also hopes to  increase its scope to reach more communities, both in the North East and beyond.

This major change also coincides with our recent move to our new home at The Winlaton Centre. Becoming a charity will help ensure the long-term future of Digital Voice as an organisation, by increasing our eligibility for funding and allowing us to accept donations as well as allowing us to continue to meet the needs of our course participants and service users.

Chief Exec Julie Nicholson said:

“We are over the moon to have been awarded charity status.  It has been a lot of hard work for everyone involved, and I really want to thank our trustees for their help and support, as well as Community Foundation North East for a Sector Support grant which enabled us to get external advice to ensure the process was as simple as possible. We're really proud of our impact as a CIC and look forward to seeing how many more people we can help by amplifying their voices to affect change, developing their creative media skills or digital inclusion.”

Special thanks to the Digital Voice team and our board of directors for helping make this happen.

Digital Voice for Communities CIC is dead (though not officially as of yet), long live Digital Voice for Communities CIO.
